The Reality Behind the CTC Number

When you receive an offer letter stating a Cost to Company (CTC) of ₹12 Lakhs per annum, you might expect around ₹1,00,000 in your bank account every month. However, the actual credited in-hand salary might be closer to ₹78,000 to ₹82,000. Here is why.

The Core Components of CTC

  • Basic Salary: Typically 40% to 50% of your total CTC. It forms the base for calculating PF and Gratuity.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): Usually 40% (non-metro) or 50% (metro) of Basic Pay. Exemption can be claimed under Income Tax laws if paying rent.
  • Special Allowance: Balancing component to adjust the remaining CTC. Fully taxable.
  • Employee & Employer EPF (Provident Fund): 12% of basic salary is contributed to your retirement fund.
  • Gratuity: Statutory benefit paid after 5 continuous years of service, but deducted from your annual CTC by many companies.
  • Variable Pay / Performance Bonus: Paid annually or quarterly based on company and individual performance metrics.
